Description:
Mina the Hollower. Curiously, during the first few minutes, you are presented with an option to choose your weapon, which includes a dagger, a mace, and a hammer. The lattermost one is likely the most unique, allowing a charged attack but adding a roll dodge to the animation. I still prefer agility more than anything else, so I took the somewhat uninspired yet reliable daggers with up-close melee attacks. At first glance, it appears to be the most secure option, but, as it allows you to attack from a distance, it does not seem to have any major drawbacks.
A few Trinkets added a boost to one of the stats,s and most of the others gave new playstyles. My favorite of these was the one that gave Mina the ability to take three steps over bottomless pits before falling, giving her an extended reach and the ability to take big steps around harder enemies. Unfortunately, it was possible to equip only a few of these upgrades at one time, and not all of them were eligible for switching out for other upgrades in a safe little base Mina could visit during the level, but as a result of this, I became much more active in using those abilities. After all, I selected them over other handy abilities!
Mina the Hollower NSPKey Features:
- The Burrowing System: Mina can dive underground to evade enemy attacks, avoid obstacles, and circumvent line-of-sight. When undercover, she can attack from above, jump over gaps, or surprise attack from behind.
- There are also various secondary weapons to use, including axes, daggers, and even some odd items, like the “Iron Steed” (a jousting bicycle).
- Trinkets & Sidearms: Trinkets are unique, customizable stat buffs for moving, defending, or attacking. Sidearms are higher-level weapons that are powerful, but have limited uses and require jewels for casting, and provide significant benefits against tough enemies and elites.
- Souls-like Economy: Players can gain “bones” from defeated enemies to spend at safe mouse holes (campfires of the game) to increase Mina’s attack and defence, or purchase items. When someone dies, bones are removed but can be retrieved.
- Aggressive Healing: In order to become healthy, the player has to hit enemies, thus promoting an aggressive rather than a passive approach to the game.
