Yu-No: A Girl Who Chants Love at the Bound of this World (YU-NO) may not be a title one would instantly recognize as a Japanese visual novel, but this is an important landmark in the development of the genre in general. First released in 1996, Yu-No is the story of Takuya and a device you are given early in the game that allows you to jump from one branching-off timeline to the next, revealing the nature of his father’s disappearance.

This Switch remake was originally released in Japan in 2017 and features brand-new character designs, a new soundtrack, and a bit of a lick of paint. The setting of Yu-No is set in an idyllic Japanese seaside town in the ’90s, and is immediately aspirational. The game shifts from beautifully illustrated screen to screen, where you’re able to observe any of your surroundings.
