Description:

Streets of Rage 4 is one of my top 5 favourite games of all time. It’s a game in my mind that is nearly perfect – it would be equally fun to play it a thousand times over. The side-scrolling beat-’em-up is one of the most popular “retro” game genres, and it’s one of the best ones to benefit from rose-tinted nostalgia. This genre would be everywhere in an early-90s arcade, often found in the form of recognizable licensed characters, wonderfully animated sprites, and a host of enemies to whack.

After years, though, these arcade favorites can turn out to be tedious and repetitive. With the pre-teen excitement of pretending to be Michelangelo or a mayor gone, you’re left pressing a single attack button for hours and hours of repetitive enemies. We haven’t seen many games in recent history that have occupied the throne, except for RPG-style juggles (Castle Crashers) and combo-riddled 3D smorgasbords (Devil May Cry). It has been a long time since I wanted a beat-’em-up that is simple to pick up and enjoyable, but somehow has a lot of fun in it for me to discover as I go.

Streets of Rage 4 Key Features:

• Special Attacks: There is a cost to using certain attacks – a risk-reward scenario. You can regain this lost health by attacking enemies and not getting hit.
• Juggle & Combo System: Pop enemies in the air and bounce them off invisible edges of the screen to string long and damaging combos and score very high.
• Super attacks are inflicted by the character and are only used on him/her when a certain amount of Stars is collected throughout the levels, and they inflict significant AoE damage.
• Weapon Catching: Possibility to throw weapons at enemies and perfectly press the button to catch the ricochet and continue using weapons.
• Diverse Roster: Play as old-timers such as Axel Stone or Blaze Fielding, or even brand new players such as Cherry Hunter, who wields a guitar, or Floyd Iraia, the Cybernetic Brawler.
