It’s a great idea to imagine some genre and see how it’s treated on Nintendo Switch and this is a tale of Skullgirls 2nd Encore! Then there’s the ultra-competitive world of fighting games right now; we’re now in the third year of the console and we’ve got full-fat ports of some of the biggest names in virtual hand-throwing, such as Mortal Kombat 11, Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection and, naturally, the city-sized roster of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Not to mention other less known titles like Blade Strangers, Brawlout and SNK Heroines: Tag Team Frenzy. Enough to say it’s a weird group and one that’s further united by the stylishly late release of Skullgirls 2nd Encore.

Unlike other games that were affected by development and legal issues and would have sunk below the horizon, Skullgirls has managed to stay afloat since being released in 2012, and continues to be a 2D fighting game with a distinct western influence that doesn’t seem entirely derivative. And those inspirations and are easy to see, too.

• Fully Voiced Story Mode: The game’s story mode is voiced and the characters come to life.

• Survival Mode: A mode which lets players see how long they can last against waves of opponents.
• All DLC Skins: Contains a lot of character palettes.
