AI: The Somnium visual novel adventure video game developed and published by Spike Chunsoft, received positive reviews for its story, art direction and characters, though some criticized the game’s tone and trial-and-error puzzle mechanics. The novel takes place in an alternate timeline, in near-future Tokyo, where Kaname Date is a detective who travels between the real world and the memories of suspects, where he can pull out information. AI: The Somnium Files is a hybrid graphic adventure/visual novel that most definitely belongs in Kotaro Uchikoshi’s lane, which is most certainly a good thing. I found myself wanting more for every scene and moment I encountered in AI: The Somnium Files.

AI: The Somnium Files NSP Key Features:

• Investigation Mode: Explore crime scenes in a near-future Tokyo from a first-person viewpoint and collect evidence, questioning suspects.
• AI-Ball Companions: “Aiba” is an advanced Artificial Intelligence to help the protagonist with investigations, which uses built-in X-ray, thermography and optical magnification.
• Somnium Dives (Dream Exploration): To unlock suppressed memories and hidden truths, you enter the subconscious dream-worlds of suspects. These dreamscapes defy physics and work on surreal dream logic.
• 6 minute limit: The mental challenge of exploring a Somnium makes it hard to spend more than 6 minutes of in-game time in it, and good planning and maneuvering is required.
• Branching Timelines: The story unfolds in several different ways and has multiple endings. An in-game flowchart allows players to skip to major choice points in the game and take alternative paths, allowing them to discover the actual ending of the game.
