Description:

YOLKED NSP would be a safe bet to say that Yoku’s Island Express is the first pinball-Metroidvania game that we’ve ever played. We hope that won’t be the final one; we really do! Villa Gorilla, a Swedish indie band, has managed to create an unlikely mash-up that’s a rare mix of appeal and ingenuity. But above all, it’s just fun to play as the lovable little beetle Yoku washes up on the magical island of Mokumana as everything goes wrong.

The influence of the pinball extends beyond just the movement, as each “dungeon” (where most of the game’s puzzles, trials, and bosses will be found) resembles a full-fledged pinball table. There’s a lot of fruit money to be collected, sequential switches to flip, and targets to go for. For the most part, it’s an odd mix of ingredients, but it never feels contrived. Never did we want to be playing a more typical Metroidvania with standard 2D platforming controls.
