Description:

Pentiment is set in the 16th-century Bavarian town of Tassing, where Andreas Maler, a painter and illuminator, works at the Kiersau Abbey. On the eve of a visit by one of the abbey’s biggest benefactors, the man is murdered, and Andreas begins an investigation to establish that his friend, Brother Piero, is innocent. Pentiment is not an action game or a game with special abilities or leveling. Instead, it’s an adventure game similar to Night in the Woods or Oxenfree.

You interact with people or objects, or move Andreas from one scene to another. That’s it. Traversal is fairly boring; there is no open-world exploration and not much variation in location in Pentiment. Rather, you simply go back and forth on a predetermined route in a limited number of spots. You discuss the characters and people in Tassing and Kiersau, make inferences about what happens to them, select dialogue for them, and wish them the best. The relationship between characters has a great impact on the story.
