Following a 48 hour game jam in 2012 in which one of its main developers came up with a rough cut of its concept, its development continued in spurts for a little over a decade before it was finally released this past June. Games that have been languishing in development hell for that long can often be a bit disjointed; fortunately, Tiny Thor is an exception. This is a tough, gorgeous, and altogether great retro platformer that you ought to consider picking up.

The 16-bit inspired game chronicles the adventures of the titular Asgardian warrior, long before he became the buff, long haired hero everybody knows, but here, the tale begins on his 8th birthday. Odin then gives him the famed hammer of Mjolnir as a gift, which Thor falls in love with. While he’s out fooling around with his new toy, the boy is approached by a certain mischievous individual, who tricks him into destroying the anchor of the Bifrost, cutting off all of Asgard from Midgard. Together with his father’s ravens, Tiny Thor embarks on a journey to right his wrongs and stop Ragnarök from destroying the world.
