Description:
GEX Trilogy: The first Gex is a bit of an outlier as a 2D side-scroller; however, the second and third are 3D platformer games, so let’s dive into the first one first. The ruler, Rez, of Gex is captured by a ruler of another zone, the Media Dimension, and wants to make Gex its new mascot. That’s something because the plot is described in the manual, which is available in the Extras menu.
The graphics are actually pre-rendered multimedia 3DO smack that, fortunately, are not out of place in the game or its 90s, but are a bit ugly at times. It gets more interesting in places like Sumo City, which is pretty much China, but with Sumo enemies; and other places you get to do things that get out of the mould, such as riding rockets and swinging through the jungle.
GEX Trilogy NSP Key Features:
- Rewind Feature: Missed a jump or suffered damage when you didn’t expect? You can scrub back through your game and play it again from any point in the game.
- Save Anywhere: No longer have to depend on checkpoints or passwords – you can save at any time.
- Modernised 360-degree analogue controls: Modernised by 360-degree analogue controls, which move smoothly in the 3D entries, and can be switched to the original 8-way digital controls.
- Native 16:9 Widescreen: The 3D games support widescreen as well, which is very nice for today’s screens.
- Retro Filters: Purists can choose to play the games in their original 4:3 format with the original CRT-style visual filters enabled.
