Sonic Mania. It seems Sega has been trying to get it right with the Sonic Mania trilogy of games, but they simply haven’t managed to nail it quite the way they did on the Mega Drive in the past. Really, since the late nineties, Sonic has starred in what have been mostly mediocre games. I think everyone had a misconception of what they liked about the original Sonic–that we forgot to have fun and went all out for ‘Sonic is fast!’

Nearly a year after it was released, SEGA is keeping the game alive with Sonic Mania Plus, a physical edition with new features and improvements such as an Encore mode that remixes the original game, and two new playable characters that haven’t appeared in the game since 1996. These updates and the package itself only enhance what’s already a great game; it definitely deserves to be checked out if it hasn’t already been played.

Sonic Mania NSP Key Features:

• Unique abilities: Play as the classic Sonic, Tails, or Knuckles, each with the ability to Drop Dash on landing for an instant speed boost, or the ability to fly and carry Sonic to secret locations, or the ability to glide and climb walls.
• Fresh and Remixed Zones: Classic levels (such as Green Hill Zone or Chemical Plant Zone) have been brought back in the game and are filled with new gimmicks, as well as completely new environments (such as Studiopolis).
• 3D Special Stages & Bonus Levels: Run down UFOs in the 3D Special Stages, or enjoy classic Blue Sphere bonus stages to unlock extras.
• Ingenious Boss Fights: Each act has a difficult and unique boss fight at the end, sometimes involving environmental puzzles and fun surprises.
• Encore Mode: A new approach to the campaign, offering alternate level layouts, different colour schemes, and a different life system where you go in and out with your characters you have.
