• Agatha Christie:The locked room murder takes place at midnight in a locked space when the train is stuck in a snow bank in the Balkans. This is an isolated location which limits the suspects to the passengers and crew on board.
• Real-Life Inspiration: The central tragedy—the kidnapping and murder of toddler Daisy Armstrong—is based on the kidnapping of aviator Charles Lindbergh’s baby.
• The Group Suspect Cast: This is not one man who serves as the mastermind of the group, but a truly diverse, international cast of passengers from different social classes and nationalities who at first glance don’t seem to have much in common except for being their respective countries’ suspects.
• The “Twelve” Killers (The Twist):At the end, Poirot suggests two solutions, the “Twelve” Killers, The Twist. The actual answer is that all 12 of the passengers were from the Armstrong household, and served as a vigilante jury to avenge the young girl.
• Moral Ambiguity and Justice: The main question is: Can moral justice exist outside of legal justice? The victim (Ratchett, aka Cassetti) avoids the law in America and is executed by the passengers in order to bring cosmic balance.
