Description:

An orphan is a child without parents, their knowledge, or their support. The term is “parentless” in some languages, including Swedish, and is less specific regarding whether parents are dead or unknown or absconded, but generally means a child or younger adult.

When a child or young person is being looked after by someone other than their parents, the child or young person is an orphan in everyday life. But the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), Joint United Nations Programme on HIV and AIDS (UNAIDS) and others consider any child who has lost a parent to be an orphan. In this definition, a maternal orphan is a child who has lost his or her mother, a paternal orphan is a child who has lost his or her father, and a double orphan is a child who has lost both of his or her parents.
