As I pulled the ignition key out of my ignition lock,Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of DANA NSP I was thinking of 2 questions. The first being, will the game live up to all the hype? Released on PS4 in fall 2017, there was already buzz about it floating around, with some going so far as to call it one of best releases of the year. The second question I had was, will I be able to fully enjoy it without playing the previous games? I had never played any of the Ys games and as a chronologist, I was afraid that I would be stuck because of the sequel nature of the game.

The opening prologue is somewhat shaky, as the franchise protagonist and adventurer by profession Adol Christin is discussing his earlier adventures with his old partner Dogi. The conversation was cut off and instead of talking about their previous trips they began their present work and guests and the setting of the luxury ship upon which Adol was working, Lombardia, in exchange for passage. The deluge of information during the entire prologue is a bit overwhelming, as trying to introduce gameplay.

• Deep Exploration: Participate in a wide range of side quests throughout the island, such as fishing, gathering resources and more.
